Class 101: Healthcare Legislation Made Simple
Web portal Health Reform GPS is providing key publics
and stakeholders with information regarding all phases of the
healthcare legislation to help Americans understand the law and its
impact.
It is a collaboration of the George Washington
University (GWU) School of Public Health and Health Services and the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Policymakers as well as
journalists, researchers, policy analysts and health reform
stakeholders can find a wealth of information, the organizations said.
The legislation and its effect is "enormously complex,
and how it’s done will have a great impact on the health and
health care of all Americans," said John Lumpkin, senior vice president
of RWJF. "Therefore, RWJF has engaged the best and the brightest to
help guide stakeholders through this process."
Calling the legislation "an instruction manual for the
health care system," Sara Rosenbaum, chair of GWU’s health policy
department, said the portal is designed to translate that manual. The
materials available at Health Reform GPS will provide a roadmap
covering all major provisions of the law and the federal implementation
process, as well as expert and public commentary. Information and
dialogue are the project’s twin goals."
The portal also includes an online library, consisting
of federal agency regulations and guidelines, analyses and studies and
other materials from key stakeholders. The site offers a health reform
glossary of terms and will be searchable through a topical index.
The portal is upgraded monthly and includes short
essays, called "Health Reform Implementation Notes," that explain the
changes made by the law, and identify the questions and challenges
policymakers will be grappling with. Once posted, health policy experts
and the public will be invited to comment.
